Point of Distribution Training at Hickory Regional Airport

By: Ms. Wendy Cook, CAP

Public Affairs Officer, Hickory Composite Squadron

If you saw this trailer at the Hickory Regional Airport recently with Civil Air Patrol members in uniform and reflective vests, this would be why. Members of the North Carolina Wing gathered at the Hickory Composite Squadron for a Point of Distribution (POD) training exercise designed to prepare volunteers for emergency response operations.

The training session, led by instructors Capt. Stephen Beal and Lt. Col. Pete Bohler, brought together cadets and senior members from across the Western North Carolina area. Participants practiced the logistical processes required to efficiently distribute essential commodities to the public during natural disasters and other large-scale emergencies.

This training is modeled after real-world applications recently seen in the region. Members put these skills into practice during the response to Hurricane Helene in Asheville, NC, and, more recently, in Anson County, NC, during a critical water main failure.

Point of Distribution training focuses on the rapid setup and management of sites where food, water, and medical supplies can be delivered to affected populations when traditional supply chains are disrupted. The exercise ensured that local personnel are equipped to support community relief efforts and coordinate with emergency management agencies during future crises.
